Artist Statement

MallardsSince the 1980′s I have strived to be a realist in all aspects of my work, primarily oil paintings and drawings.  When properly applied, I can render a life-like drawing and highly detailed; technically perfect painting.  I realize now that it is not enough.   The human mind requires art to be interesting.  The human mind wants to be challenged.  The human mind wants to examine a piece of artwork and fill in the blanks intentionally left by the artist.  Quite simply put: What is not painted or drawn is much more important than what is.  A art skill is the ability to choose these skips and omissions.  A talent is doing it naturally and without calculation.  Above, I have stated my definition of an impressionist.  Through a more serious approach to studying other artists’ and my own work, I am consciously moving towards a more impressionist style and a more expressively free medium: Watercolor.
